Here I’m going to discuss about the world tallest building from 2004 before the opening of Burj khalifa in the year 2010. After losing its world tallest building status, it entered into another landmark in 2011.Which is the largest and tallest “GREEN BUILDING” in the world.

Yes! The name of the building is TAIPEI 101, which early known as Taipei world financial center. This building was awarded the LEED platinum certification the highest award according to the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system.

The construction of this building was started in 1999 and finished in 2004. The building was architecturally created as a symbol of the evolution of technology and Asian tradition. Technically it is designed to withstand typhoons and earthquakes. It is the first building in the world to break the half kilometer mark in height (508m). It also has the record of having world tallest sundial and the largest countdown clock.

On the other hand Taipei 101 is one of the most stable buildings ever constructed. Its foundation is strengthened by 380 piles driven 80m into the ground and another 30m into the bedrocks. During its construction of 56th floor in March,2002 an earthquake of magnitude 6.8 rocked Taipei and the stability of the building came to known by an inspection that no structural damage was found to the building and the construction was resumed.

In order to withstand the strong winds a steel pendulum of 660 tons which acts as a tuned mass damper is suspended from the buildings 92nd floor to 87th floor. This tuned mass damper sways to offset movements in building caused by strong wind and it resists up to 40% of tower movement.

As a characteristic of green building Taipei 101 consists of blue-green glass curtain walls which blocks nearly 50% of external heat and its own roof and recycled water system meets 20 – 30% of the building water needs. The sundial uses the energy drawn from wind shear of the building. It also decreases potable water usage by at least 30% compared to average building consumption saving about 28million liters of potable water annually and it reduces energy consumption by 33.41million kWh per year.

The tower of Taipei 101 plays a role of torch i.e in every evening from 6 to 10 the tower lights displays one of the seven colors in the spectrum. These colors coincides with the days of the week which comes in the order of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet and purple from Monday to Sunday.

Also this building displays a firework before the birth of every English New Year and the countdown was displayed in its largest countdown clock. Not only during the new year has celebration it also displays its beauty of firework and others on important national and international day celebrations.
